The definition of fundamental goals and strategy is the most important duty of the board. Unless it fulfils this duty, the board will have no touchstone to determine the appropriateness of its actions, the performance of management or the success of the organization itself.

A Key to Understanding and Writing Policy |

The dictionary defines a policy as "a principle on which any measure or course of action is based." A policy is a formal expression of opinion. It clarifies the board’s expectations of what is to be done and how it is to be done. A policy identifies the future outcome, which the board hopes to achieve and the procedures to be used by directors, committee members, staff, and volunteers.
